Important Message for Beginners!

Yoga is a path to wellness not athletic accomplishment.  Anyone can start at any age and any level of physical health.

Simply put, yoga is the greatest system of health ever developed.  Most of the living gurus are still teaching and practicing yoga in their 90’s!

Yoga Sutra offers the perfect entry point for beginners of all ages and levels of fitness, including those who have never done yoga, can’t touch their toes, are overweight, or are recovering from injuries.

We are also the perfect place to continue the journey of yoga for a lifetime and offer daily classes in each style of yoga for students as they advance.

If you live or work in the New York area, purchase a single class on your first night OR purchase a 7 day unlimited trial membership for $30. (Either way, new students receive a 15% discount on your first class package.) See the “Fees” section of the website for more information.  Please call with any specific questions.

Important Message for Experienced Students!

Yoga Sutra employs only teachers who are career yoga instructors and are themselves advanced practitioners in their respective style.

Our Ashtanga teachers are authorized by Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois and our Iyengar teachers are certified by BKS Iyengar and/or the IYNAUS.

Our teachers travel to India annually for direct study with the founders of their style of yoga (e.g. BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, TKV Desikachar).

We offer classes for advanced students in each style - Ashtanga students can be taught into the fourth series at Yoga Sutra in our Mysore-style classes.

Yoga Sutra offers teacher training, meditation, and academic study of Sanskrit, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and the Bhagavad Gita.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a 4,000 year-old system of health and wellbeing.  The benefits of yoga are multidimensional – physical, emotional, and spiritual.  Many people are attracted to yoga practice initially for the physical benefits, which are innumerable, but realize over time that Yoga has improved their lives.  For those seeking “exercise” or “stress relief,” there is nothing better than yoga.  Every class at Yoga Sutra provides a complete “workout” that strengthens and tones the body, improves posture, relieves back pain, and provides a sense of wellbeing.  Yoga is an excellent compliment to other exercise routines.  Everyone can do Yoga.

Styles of Yoga at Yoga Sutra

We take great pride in the purity and authenticity of our teachings and our teachers.  At Yoga Sutra we teach yoga styles that are direct descendents of Sri. Krishnamacharya.

Ashtanga

Sri K Pattabhi
Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois
Ashtanga Yoga is a breathing/movement system that follows a therapeutic and progressive sequence of asanas. The benefits are far reaching and include increased strength, flexibility, balance, and ease of movement as well as mental calm and reduced stress.

The term "Mysore" refers to the way Ashtanga Yoga has been taught by 94-year-old yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the city of Mysore, India. In the Mysore class, each student is encouraged to memorize this sequence and develop a daily personal practice. This is a unique program where each student is taught individually. In other words, he or she is given a one-on-one lesson within the group setting. Led Ashtanga classes are taught by the teacher calling out the postures and students perform them in unison, rather than individually within the group.

Beginner’s suggestion: Sign up for our 5 class Introduction to Mysore Ashtanga Pass for $50. The student will take 5 Mysore Ashtanga classes and receive a solid foundation on which to build their Ashtanga practice. Alternatively, take an Ashtanga Basics class first on Sundays at 12:30.

Iyengar

Iyengar
B.K.S. Iyengar

Iyengar yoga is a Hatha Yoga form that uses props such as blankets, blocks, ropes, straps, and weights.  Both the props and the instructional style of this Yoga practice assist practitioners in assuming postures otherwise unattainable.  Iyengar Yoga teaches attention to detail and alignment, and maintenance of a reflective state during asanas.  The hallmarks of Iyengar Yoga are strength, stamina, flexibility, and an increased sense of well-being.

Vinyasa

VinyasaVinyasa yoga is a breath-synchronized movement system characterized by rhythmic pacing and dynamic flow. Your Vinyasa teacher designs a series of breath-connected postures (asanas) that encourage integration of body and mind. Inhaling and exhaling cues inform the movement of interwoven asanas. Called “vinyasas”, these sequenced grouping of asanas vary from class to class. The emphasis of breath in tandem with movement, along with a deliberate ordering of postures builds flexibility, strength and energy. As breath and body coordinate, the mind follows their union improving clarity and focus. Vinyasa yoga cultivates an ability to skillfully move and smoothly transition from asana to asana, leading to a sense of well-being and contentment.

Beginner’s suggestion: Beginner/Intermediate, General Level and Lunch classes are suitable for beginners. However, absolute beginners should investigate our on-going Beginner Vinyasa Series (link to workshops) when available in order to develop the fundamental skills necessary to insure a safe and long-lived yoga practice.
